The ploughshare bone

Vomer · vomer

A thin flat bone forming the back part of the wall between your nostrils.

What it does

The vomer is a thin, flat bone in the midline of the nasal cavity. It forms the lower back part of the septum, the wall that splits your nose into left and right passages. In front of it the septum continues as cartilage.

Surprising fact

The vomer gets its name from the Latin word for a ploughshare, because of its blade-like shape.

Why it matters

Many people have a slightly bent septum. When the bend is large it can block one side of the nose, cause snoring and make breathing through that nostril difficult.
