The deep spinal muscles

Transversospinales (multifidus, rotatores, semispinalis)

Short, deep muscles packed between the vertebrae that fine-tune the spine.

What it does

Under the long back muscles, short muscles run at a slant from one vertebra to the next. They stiffen and twist small sections of the spine, adjusting them many times a second. The biggest, the multifidus, is thickest in the lower back.
