The forehead bone

Frontal bone · os frontale

The curved bone of your forehead, which also forms the roofs of your eye sockets.

What it does

The frontal bone shapes your forehead and the ridges above your eyes. Behind it sit the frontal lobes of the brain, and below it the eye sockets. Hollow air spaces inside it, the frontal sinuses, make the skull lighter and help warm the air you breathe.

Surprising fact

At birth the frontal bone is in two halves joined down the middle; in most people they fuse completely within the first couple of years.

Why it matters

When a cold or hay fever blocks the frontal sinuses, the pressure builds behind your forehead, which is why sinus headaches feel like they sit right above your eyebrows.
