The voice box ligaments
Ligaments and membranes of the larynx
Membranes linking the cartilages of the voice box to each other and to the hyoid.
What it does
Sheets of fibrous tissue join the hyoid bone, the thyroid cartilage and the cricoid ring, suspending the voice box in the neck. Inside, folded membranes form the framework of the vocal cords.
Surprising fact
The membrane between the thyroid and cricoid cartilages is the spot where an emergency airway can be made, because it lies just under the skin with no major vessels in front.
Why it matters
That small, soft gap in the front of your neck has saved many lives when the airway above was blocked.
