The deep hip rotators
Gemelli, obturator internus and externus, quadratus femoris
A group of small deep muscles behind the hip that turn the thigh outwards.
What it does
Beneath the buttock, a group of short muscles runs from the pelvis to the back of the femur. The two gemelli, the obturators and quadratus femoris turn the thigh outwards and hold the head of the femur snugly in its socket, a little like a rotator cuff for the hip.
