The little brain
Cerebellum · cerebellum
A wrinkled structure at the back of your brain that makes movements smooth, accurate and well-timed.
What it does
The cerebellum sits under the back of the brain. It compares what you intend to do with what your body is actually doing and makes rapid corrections, giving your movements their smoothness and timing. It also helps with balance, posture and learning skills like riding a bike.
Surprising fact
The cerebellum makes up about a tenth of the brain's volume but contains more than half of all its nerve cells.
Why it matters
Alcohol affects the cerebellum early, which is why police roadside tests check balance and the ability to touch your nose with your eyes closed.
