The atlas (top neck bone)

Atlas (C1) · atlas

The ring-shaped first vertebra that cradles your skull and lets you nod "yes".

What it does

The atlas is a bony ring at the very top of your spine. Unlike other vertebrae it has no solid body; instead, two cup-shaped surfaces hold the base of the skull. The nodding movement of "yes" happens mostly at this joint.

Surprising fact

The atlas is named after the Titan Atlas of Greek myth, who held the heavens on his shoulders, just as this bone holds up your head.

Why it matters

The top of the neck is a delicate area. Whiplash and sudden jolts can strain the ligaments around the atlas, which is why car headrests should sit level with the back of your head.
